40 Days of Prayer…
…Refresh! A Call to Prayer to Close the Year
We started the year with a Mini-Series on the theme of prayer and a special 40-Day Journey of Prayer together. As we come to the end of 2016, let's take an opportunity to reaffirm this theme and important value. One way to do this is to utilize the last 40 days of the year (that begins this Tuesday, November 22) to repeat this prayer emphasis. If you took the journey at the beginning of the year, you may want to pull out your book and reuse it for this purpose. If you didn't take the journey earlier this year (or if you would simply like a clean book), you can pick up one of the 40-Day Booklets at the welcome center. (Just be sure to adjust the date to start on Tuesday instead of the Wednesday, so that we conclude on December 31st)
Known as the “Father of English Hymnody”, Isaac Watts was not only a prolific hymn writer but also a theologian and a man of prayer. His words of caution and counsel on this vital spiritual discipline are worthy of note at the start of our adventure.
“There is a great difference between the skill and the grace of prayer. The skill consists chiefly in a readiness of thought consistent with the various aspects of prayer, and a facility for expressing those thoughts in speaking to God. The grace consists in the inward workings of the heart and conscience toward God and our life of faith. The skill is but the outside, the shape, the carcass of our responsibility. The grace is the soul and spirit that gives it life, vigor, and efficacy, that renders it acceptable to God and of real advantage to ourselves.” —Isaac Watts
As we retrace this 40-Day Journey together, may it be the grace of prayer that flourishes, and not simply the mastery of the mechanics. Borrowing a phrase that the apostle Paul applied in another setting, I would exhort us in regard to prayer, “May we abound in this grace also!”
Pick up the 40-Day Prayer Guide
We still have a handful of the printed booklets remaining from our earlier journey. You can pick one up at the Welcome Center if you don't have one already. We also created a digital version that has the corresponding year-end dates (November 22-December 31). You can download a copy of that version right here.
